MEGAL invests in the future of gas infrastructure

17.10.2018 Press Release

At a ceremony on 11 October 2018 to mark the end of construction activities on site, GRTgaz Deutschland and Open Grid Europe celebrated the completion of an extensive expansion project at MEGAL’s compressor station in Rothenstadt. The main part of the project are three new compressor units with a total capacity of 45 megawatts, which is equivalent to the power of 450 Volkswagen Golf cars. With a volumetric flow rate of up to 2.8 million Nm³/h, the Rothenstadt compressor station will significantly increase the capacity of the MEGAL gas pipeline system. The additional compressor power will provide extra transmission capacities for the bayernets pipeline network and the Austrian storage facilities 7Fields and Haidach and also boost gas transmission from the north to the south and vice versa.

"The gas infrastructure is an indispensable prerequisite for secure and reliable energy supplies to Germany and Europe. We are now making substantial investments to guarantee the high level of supply security also in future. What’s more, the gas infrastructure offers great potential for achieving the climate protection targets, and we want to tap into this potential, for example by continuously increasing the proportion of green gases in our network," said Jörg Bergmann, Chairman of the Management Board of Open Grid Europe and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of MEGAL, at the construction site closing ceremony.

"The expansion of the Rothenstadt compressor station will make the MEGAL pipeline system more efficient and flexible. It connects important sales markets and is therefore indispensable for a common European gas market," said Nicolas Delaporte, Managing Director of GRTgaz Deutschland, in his welcoming address.

The Rothenstadt compressor station is an integral part of the MEGAL pipeline system which runs from Waidhaus on Germany’s border with the Czech Republic to the French border in Medelsheim, making it one of the most important gas transport routes for natural gas in Europe. It is also the backbone of natural gas supply to southern Germany.

MEGAL GmbH & Co. KG is a joint venture of the pipeline network operators Open Grid Europe and GRTgaz Deutschland and thus a living symbol of Franco-German partnership. With this joint venture the two companies are assuming their joint responsibility for an increasingly integrated European gas market.
